Genevieve Waterbury (she/her) is a performing and choreographic artist and teacher based in Minneapolis. Her artistic goal is to create work which fosters sensitivity for, and the desire to empathize with, all stages and forms of life. She joined the staff of Ballet Co.Laboratory in 2020 and, as Assistant Artistic Director, she teaches in the drop-in program, choreographs for the professional company, and directs the Junior and Adult Performance Ensembles.
Genevieve studied dance at Colorado State University, then joined Nevada Ballet Theatre in Las Vegas where she collaborated annually with Cirque du Soleil. These years sparked an interest in dance theater, prompting her move to New York City. Dancing highlights in NYC include a residency at Kaatsbaan with Kogut Butoh, the original cast of RED, a New Musical, New York Fashion Week performance for JAHNKOYxPUMA, and several seasons as a company member with nathantrice/RITUALS. Since moving to Minnesota, Genevieve has performed with Supermoon Theater, Hatch Dance, Honeyworks, Jagged Moves, Ballet Co.Laboratory, Christopher Watson Dance Company, and Sod House Theater, and choreographed for Ballet Co.Laboratory, The Soiled Dance Series, SPCPA’s January Term, Christopher Watson Dance Company, The River’s Edge Series, and Virginia Twins.
Genevieve comes from a family of educators and is a certified instructor of The Gyrotonic Movement System®. Her approach to teaching is shaped and reshaped by the curiosity of the adult dancer community she teaches, through her experience recovering from dance injuries, and by mentors who inspire emotional growth as much as technical. Her multidisciplinary foundation inspires a teaching philosophy of identifying and confronting habits that obstruct artistry and lead to injury, presenting music as a relationship filled with listening and choice making, and by honoring play. She is a forever learner and is so grateful to be surrounded by vulnerability and open-mindedness in her job every day! GENEVIEVEWATERBURY.COM
